Downtown Bars Scene
Along Stephen Avenue, there has been a hubbub of places opening up in some of Calgary's oldest heritage buildings east of First Street: the Auburn Saloon (recently moved from beside Teatro's to the base of the Calgary tower), James Joyce Pub, and Saltlik's & the Sky Bar. If you want to impress your business associates there are two places to consider: the very classic Thompson's in the new Hyatt Hotel, and the Fairmont Palliser Hotel'sOakroom Lounge (in the lobby).
West of First Street where all the office towers cluster, there's Earl's and Fuel (owned by Earl's) both in Bankers Hall,
and across the street is the lounge in the Metropolitan Grill (very popular with the oil patch executives),
the patio at Dakota Bar and Grill, and in the basement at the Unicorn Irish Pub.
Along the next block west is the lounge in Belgo Brasserie, Chicago Chophouse, though demolition of Penny Lane for a new office tower has closed down Ceili's Irish Pub (now with a three blocks west at 7th Street), the posh 3 storey Mynt Ultralounge, and Cowboys (new downtown location planned for Fall 2007). Around 6th Street and 7th Street (by the Uptown and Globe theatres) are several establishments including Ceili's, Area 51 nightclub and Soho's (on the south-east corner of the gold Husky Towers)
