Home: Elbow River Neighbourhoods
[ Other Neighbourhoods | SW Neighbourhoods Map ]
There are a number of communities along the banks of the Elbow that provide quiet surroundings close-in to the downtown core. This area is very desirable for corporate executives who can afford the high price in return for a short commute. Roxboro has a mix of high-end condos and affordable apartments on the north bank of the Elbow River, and expensive single family homes on the south bank. Overlooking the river valley and the downtown is the Rideau Place condominium community, with both condos and apartments and two private pools. Moving south, Parkhill's 1A Street is known by many as "Architecture Alley" for its stunning in-fill houses with great views. The prestigious Stanley Park neighbourhood sits on a north-facing hill, overlooking the park for which the community is named.
Schools
Two public schools are in the community and the high schools are reasonably clase. Parkhill and Stanley Park are close to the 39 Avenue LRT station.
Shopping
The area has a Safeway on 4th Street at Elbow, and is close to shops and boutiques along either 4ht Street. For close-by malls, head either downtown to TD Square and Banker's Hall, or south to Chinook Centre on Macleod Trail.
Recreation
The area lies right on the Elbow River recreational pathways, and is close to both the Glencoe Club (private) and the Lindsay Parks Sports Centre (public). Stanley Park has both an outdoor pool and a beach (though somewhat gravely). The area is also close to the Calgary Stampede Grounds (but far enough away to be quiet). 4th Street has plenty of restaurants and bars, being Calgary's Restaurant Row. For movies, head into downtown for a choice of 6 theatres. Of course, the popular Arts Centre is just inside the downtown on 8th Avenue at Macleod Trail.
Homes
The community is mostly large older single family homes, with the largest homes fronting on the Elbow River. There are a number of recently renovated and recently built homes in these communities. Other than along Elbow Drive, Sifton Blvd, and 4th Stret/ 2nd Street, most streets have low traffic and noise levels.
Homes
The community is mostly single family homes, with some semi-detached homesm all more modestly priced than the larger homes west of Elbow, and closer to the reservoir. There are clusters of low-rise multi-unit condominiums at 58 Ave, 75 Ave, 89 Ave and at Southampton.
