Homes: Lynwood Ridge, Ogden, Riverbend neighbourhoods

[ Other Neighbourhoods | SE Neighbourhoods Map ]

The community lies on the east bank of the Bow River, south of Ogden Road, and bisected by Glenmore Trail. This is on of the older communities in Calgary, and was originally built to service the large CPR Ogden railyards in 1912-1913 to service the area between Winnipeg and Vancouver. Ogden was named after I.G. Ogden, who was the Vice President of the Canadian Pacific Railway during the early 1900s. Ogden has a lot of green space, including open recreational parkland in the middle of the neighbourhood, as well as undeveloped parkland along the eastern bank of the Bow River.

Aerial View of Ogden area Lynwood Ridge is on the north end of Ogden, on land that many years ago was an Esso/Imperial Oil Refinery (please note: in 2001 the area was discovered to have high levels of lead and hydrocarbons in the soil and will be undergoing a decade-long remediation process). Riverbend, south of Glenmore Trail, is newer and most homes were built since the early 1980s. Many homes in this area enjoy views of both the Rocky Mountains and the wooded Bow River floodplain. On the eastern edge of the community are two mobile home parks. Access to the rest of the city is via Glenmore and Deerfoot Trails is excellent.

Schools
Ogden is a mature community and has a number of public schools with both boards. Riverbend is newer and lacks schools. High school students from both boards will need to commute to their schools.

Shopping
The Ogden and Riverbend communities are serviced by Riverbend Centre to the south of Glenmore Trail, and Glenmore Square to the north. The most accessible large shopping mall is Chinook Centre, west on Glenmore Trail at Macleod. The area around Chinook also has a number of "big box" stores

Recreation
The community ahs an outdoor pool and in indoor ice arena in the middle of Ogden. The Bow River recreational pathway system is accessible from the west side of the community (with several bridges over the Bow at this point). Beaver Dam Flats Park is surrounded by water on three sides. Along the eastern edge is the Irrigation Canal, which also has a recreational pathway that connects Lake Chestermere east of Calgary with the Bow River just east of the Calgary Zoo (the big plus is the pathway is very level). There is a golf range a few kilometres to the east, as is as the Calgary Soccer Centre. To the south, in Douglasdale is a golf club and driving range.

Homes
The community is mostly single family homes. Some of the homes in Ogden are over 50 years old and smaller in size, while the homes in Lynwood were built in the 1990s and are move-up homes. There are some multi-unit condos along Lysander Crescent.
