Somerset and Somerside are located south of Fish Creek Provincial Park, and southwest of the old Shawnessy community.
Somerset is nestled between 6 Street and 14th Street SW, and between 162nd Avenue to the north and Marquis of Lorne Trail (Highway 22X) to the south.
This community is adjacent to the Somerset station at the south terminus of the LRT transit system
Schools
Public board attendees are bused to Ethel M. Johnson Elementary and Harold Panabaker Junior High (both in Southwood), and and the new Centennial High School in Sundance.
Separate board students attend Father Doucet Elementary in Shawnessy, Our Lady of Peace Junior High in Millrise, and Bishop O'Byrne High in Sundance.
Shopping
Shopping for the area is east off Macleod Trail in Shawnessy Village, complete with a Safeway, Superstore, a Chapters and a new "Coliseum style" movie multiplex. The largest area shopping centre is Southcentre Mall.
Recreation
A six-acre public square at one of the two entrances into Somerset is designed like an English country garden with extensive landscaping.
It includes decorating accents like archways, picnic areas, pathways, a pair of tennis courts, volleyball and basketball courts, a gazebo, and a water park that converts to a winter skating rink.
The residents' association maintains the park well above city standards, for an annual levy of $50.
The area's major recreation facilites are the South Fish Creek Recreation Centre with its ice arena, and the YMCA, with two wave pools, the Southland Leisure Centre to the north, and the Family Leisure Centre to the east. Shawnee Slopes golf course is in the middle of the community. The Famous Players Coliseum movie theatres are right on Macleod Trail.
Two soccer fields ball diamonds will occupy a future school site on the south side of the community's main route, the looping Somerset Drive. The community is connected to the Calgary recreational pathway system, which provide the best access to nearby Fish Creek Provincial Park.
There is wetland maintained by Ducks Unlimited on the northwest corner of 14th Street and Highway 22x, complete with viewing stations (no boating allowed). Bridlewood is 1 kilometre north of the world-famous Spruce Meadows equestrian facility (on 14 St SW).
Homes
Somerset has 600 lots, and now is a mature neighbourhood, with only resale homes available The community is mostly single family homes, with some semi-detached, and some multi-unit townhouses east of 6th Street/4th Street.
