The village of Irricana is located 35 minutes northeast of Calgary. It is in the middle of some
of Alberta's most fertile farming and agricultural land. The area has ostrich, goat and purebred cattle farms.
The annual Pioneer Acres Historical Farm Equipment Show held every August has thousands camping in area pastures.
The community was establsihed in 1909, and its name is a combination of the words "irrigation" and "canal", based on an 1894 land grant that permitted development of agricultural land once an irrigation system was built from the Bow River. The system was abandoned before completion but the name has remained.
