Personal: Recycling at Bottle Depots
PEI is unique in that, since 1977, most non-refillable beverage containers have
been banned from the province. Today, all beer and soft drinks sold in
PEI are in refillable glass bottles. Wine and spirits bottles are part of the
deposit system but have no refillability requirements.
Consumers have the option of returning containers to supermarkets, convenience stores or depots.
Typically you receive a full refund at larger retailers and discounted refunds at some smaller retailers and depots.
Retailers must accept a product for return if they sell the productm, though
they may limit returns to 24 bottles within a 24 hour period. Under the Act, retailers have the right to refuse returns on Sundays or holidays.
| Product | Deposit | Refund |
| Soft Drink (500 ml or less) | 20¢ | 17¢ |
| Soft Drink (>500 ml) | 40¢ | 34¢ |
| Soft Drink (>1.5 L) | 80¢ | 70¢ |
| Beer or Cooler Containers | 10¢ | $1.20/dozen or 7¢ loose |
| Wine (500 ml or less) | 10¢ | 5¢ |
| Wine (>500 ml) | 20¢ | 10¢ |
PEI has several bottle depots, that make it convenient to return empty containers for a deposit refund.
Over 500 million containers are returned each year, which is about 80 - 90 per cent of all those containers manufactured and sold. Of course, many of the balance are accounted for by the "blue box" program and are recycled, so our land fills are not burdened with unnecessary waste materials.
