The town is named for the mice that came with early settlers ships. The town gained recognition from American playwright Ekmer Harris's play "Johnny Belinda" which played on New York's Broadway for 320 performances. The town supports a sport, commercial and lobster fishery, and the port offers ferry service to Quebec's Madgelen Islands from April to January.

This museum tells the story of the inshore fishery is told through artifacts, dioramas, small-craft displays and a coastal ecology exhibit. A boardwalk leads to the magnificent Singing Sands beach. Open June through fall. Admission charged. Children 12 and under nd PEI Museum members admitted free, except for special events. Group and school tour rates available.
