Edmonton’s winter’s are typical for Canada, giving the city a coating of white snow from late November until April. Here are a couple of winter suggestions:
  1. Skate outdoors Many communities maintain outdoor rinks, but you can also visit the more scenic outdoor rinks (no hockey sticks):
    • Victoria Park Oval (River Road & 116 Street) with washrooms, skate change area, music
    • William Hawrelak Park (93 Avenue & Groat Road) with washrooms, skate change area, skate sharpening service, and food concession
    • Rundle Park (113 Avenue & 29 Street) with washrooms, skate change are, skate sharpening service, food concession
  2. Take a hike along the city's river valley bike paths. They're especially pretty with fresh snow on the ground. The most scenic are:
    • Below downtown
    • Around Fort Edmonton
    • Walterdale Park
    • Emily Murphy Park, below U·Wanna·What of A
    • Mill Creek
  3. Cross Country Skiing The city maintains a number of cross country ski trails
  4. Head out of town The countryside around Edmonton has some winter wonderlands with lots of snow. The Lake Country provides a pleasant combination of scenic hills and flat frozen lakes for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
