Homes: Spruce Grove

Spruce Grove, has 22,000 residents (2008), and is in Parkland County 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of downtown Edmonton. Spruce Grove is the 11th largest city in Alberta. Spruce Grove is named for the stands of tall spruce trees in the area, and was originally settled by French and Scottish families in 1891. With the arrival of the railroad, the community became a busy grain trading centre. Spruce Grove became a village in 1955, became a town in 1971, and a city in 1986.

The bulk of Spruce Grove is located between the #16 Yellowhead Highway to the north (with two exits for Spruce Grove) and Highway 16A to the south, which has several traffic intersections.Highway 16A goes west to Stony Plain and east to become Edmonton's Stony Plain Road (and Jasper Avenue). Highway 16 connects west to Jasper, and east to Edmonton. Spruce Grove has rush hour commuter bus service provided by Edmonton Transit. Spruce Grove has excellent rail access, though passenger traffic only exists between Edmonton and Vancouver during the summer.

Schools

Spruce Grove is served by the Parkland School Division No. 70 and the Evergreen Catholic Separate Regional Division #2. Spruce Gove has 3 public elementary schools, 2 public middle schools, and 1 public high school, as well as 1 each Catholic elementary, middle and high school. The community is also home to a private Christian school, and a fine public library.

Shopping

Spruce Grove has most of its shopping and malls clustered along 16A, in the southern part of the community. Shopping in Edmonton's west end is only fifteen minutes away.

Recreation

The Horizon stage is a centre for performing arts here and there is a 7 screen theatre complex. The Spruce Grove Saints are a competitive Junior A hockey team.

For athletes, there is the TransAlta Tri-Municipal Leisure Centre combines a indoor pool, soccer fields, a gymnasium, workout gym, and ice rinks, and the Agrena with curling rinks and twin ice arenas. Spruce Grove has a lot or participation in amateur sports with groups active in hockey, soccer, football,and baseball. The Heritage Grove Trail provides 25.5 km of nature trails in the 50 hectare Heritage Grove Park. There are also 20 kilometres of paved recreational pathways.

Homes

About 75% percent of homes in Stony Plain are single family detached homes, with another 10% being apartments under 5 storeys, and another 10% being semi-detached or townhouses. About half the dwellings were built prior to 1986, and half since then.
