Sports: Edmonton's Competitive Sports scene
Edmonton has some great opportunities to watch somebody ELSE sweat it out, with some top-level competitive athletes. We’re not called the "City of Champions" for nothing either!
Edmonton Eskimos
This is Edmonton’s team in the Canadian Football League. The team plays at Commonwealth Stadium, with a season running from June until October, plus (of course) the play-offs. An exciting way to spend a summer evening with friends. Phone (780) 448-ESKS (3757).
Edmonton Oilers Hockey
Edmonton’s team in the National Hockey League has won the Stanley Cup several times over the years.
Over their 26 seasons, the Oilers began life as a charter member of the
World Hockey Association in 1972/73, and in 1979 became a member of the National Hockey League.
In the 1983-84 season they won their first of a long string of Stanley Cups,
including after 1989 when Wayne Gretzy left for Los Angeles.
The hockey season runs from September until April, plus playoffs. You could get all sorts of good tickets. (780) 414-4650.

University of Alberta Golden Bears & Pandas
The University of Alberta fields several top national teams, called the "Golden Bears" for men’s teams and {Pandas" for women’s teams. The teams are all top grade, winning national championships and providing players for many national and Olympic teams. The football team is regularly in the national championships, the Vanier Cup.
NAIT "Oooks"
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s athletic teams are called the "Oooks" with an owl as their mascot. They compete in a number of sprts in the Western Canadian College leagues. Call (780) 471-7601 for ticket information.
Northlands Raceway
Catch thoroughbred horse racing season runs from April to June, with a break for the Edmonton Stampede. Harness racing runs from mid-July to October. The upstairs dining room provides shelter and a great view of the track. Of course, betting makes the races more "interesting".
Canadian Finals Rodeo
This rodeo championship with riders and ropers determines the top Canadian All-Around Cowboy. It is held every fall, this year November 10-14 (November 8-12, 2000). Call (780) 471-7210.
