Home: Chilliwack Community
Chilliwack's 65,000 residents live about 100 km east of Vancouver, about an 80 minute drive on the Trans-Canada Highway, and 25 minutes from a major border crossing. The community has grown a steady 5% a year, and is expected to grow to 200,000 by the year 2020. Chilliwack is bounded by the Fraser River on the North and the Chilliwack and Vedder Rivers on the south, against the backdrop of the Cascade Mountain range. The community has a diverse economy, based on forestry, agriculture, and related processing/manufacture. Recent economic diversification has brought in aircraft manufacture, pet food, pharmaceuticals, as well as environmental services.
Housing
Chilliwack has a number of urban communities including Chilliwack, Sardis and Village West, and a number of hillside areas including Eastern Hillsides, Promontory, and Ryder lake. Some of the outlying, more rural areas, include Yarrow, Rosedale, and Greendale. New homes in Chilliwack which overlook the Fraser Valley in the $80,000 to $130,000 range, while those with scenic or mountain views priced in the $200,000 to $400,000 range.
Schools
Chilliwack is served by Chilliwack School District #33, which manages We 21 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, 2 senior secondary schools, a storefront school and several alternative schools.
Shopping
Chilliwack has a number of shopping areas and malls, including around Sardis and Vedder. You'll find a lot of what you might need at the two largest of Chilliwack's 14 or so malls. Cottonwood Mall and Chilliwack mall together encompass around 100 retail outlets of diverse size. Zellers, Sears, and London Drugs, anchor Cottonwood Mall, while Wal-Mart and Safeway underpin Chilliwack Mall. Nearby, are the large stand-alone operations of Canadian tire and the Real Canadian superstore.
Specialty stores can be found in the downtown core or along either principally Vedder Road or Luckakuck Way in Sardis and Vedder.
Recreation
The Chilliwack area offers a broad range of recreational pursuits, with bike trails along the Dikes, waterslides at Cultus Lake and at Bridal Veil Falls, various watersports at Cultus Lake, excellent rafting, kayaking and canoeing on the Chilliwack River.
