Transportation: Halifax's Airport, YHZ

Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) was built near Kelly Lake and opened in 1960. The airport is named for Robert L. Stanfield, who was born in nearby Truro, was Premier of Nova Scotia and leader of the federal Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Halifax International Airport operates 24 hours per day with over 160 departures daily (carrying 3.4 million passengers a year) to 38 destinations in North America and Europe. Flight are provided by 25 airlines, some offering seasonal service, with easy access to the rest of Canada, the US (Newark NJ, Boston, New York City, Chicago, and Washington have non-stops), Europe, and tropical vacation destinations. Halifax International Airport is 35 km (21 miles) northwest of downtown Halifax along Highway 102, and approximately 30 km (18 miles) from downtown Dartmouth. The airport, with an elevation of 477' above sea level, has two runways, one asphalt and concrete with a length of 8800' and a 7700' asphalt runway (both 200' wide).

  • Business travelers are looking to be more effective while waiting for their flights, so three sets of quadruple workstations with modem-equipped pay phones are located throughout the Departures Lounge of the airport. These workstations provide both Internet access and a more private workspace for users. There are also Internet kiosks located throughout the Terminal Building.

    The Halifax International Airport offers tours as a community service, designed primarily for of youth in the community, though tours are also available for groups of the not-so-young. Tours of the Airport are by volunteers only on Tuesdays, from mid-September to mid-June (excluding peak seasonal periods). A tour lasts 4 to 6 hours and can be customized to the needs of a group (902.873.1479E-mail: kelly.martin@hiaa.ca).

    Halifax International Airport Authority's offices are at PO Box 40, 1 Bell Boulevard, Enfield, Nova Scotia, Canada, B2T 1K2 you can telephone them at 902-873-4422 or by fax at 902-873-4750.

    Parking
    Halifax International Airport provides long-term parking on open air surface lots, security patrolled 24-hours a day. Long Term Parking lot at the terminal will cost you $3 per hour (or part thereof) up to of $12.00 per day. The remote Park'N'Fly lot is $9 per day, to a maximum of $45 per week (7 day period). Metered parking accepts quarters (twenty-five cent pieces) as well as loonies and toonies (one and two dollar coins). Metered Parking rates are 60 minutes for $2.25. Change-making machines are located just inside the South and Center Tunnel entrances. These prices include all applicable taxes.

    Transportation
    From the airport, the best way into town is by taxi, which are available curbside in the Domestic Arrivals area for all arriving flights. A one-way trip to Halifax city center is $43.00 (Canadian) by taxi and $53.00 (Canadian) by limousine. AirBus shuttle service to and from various hotels in the Metro Area s provided by Zincks Bus Company (902-873-2091). 21 daily departures, starting at 5 am (first bus leaves city for airport) and 6 am (first bus leaves airport for city) until 23:15. Regular fares are $16.00 (Canadian)each way. Children under 10 years, accompanied by an adult, ride for free. Acadian Lines (902-454-9321) provides province-wide bus service from Halifax International Airport with several departures daily for Sydney, Annapolis Valley, Yarmouth, Truro and even Prince Edward Island. You can also rent-a-car (cost varies). If you are planning to stay in Halifax itself, everything is close together and a short walk from the core.
