Anna Leonowens Gallery Nova Scotia College of Art & Design 1891 Granville St., Halifax 494-8223 The gallery is named for the Victorian woman who served the King of Siam as governess and whose memoirs served as inspiration for Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I. Founding the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design was just another feather in her cap. Three exhibition spaces serve as a showcase for the college faculty and students. The displays focus on contemporary studio and media art.Weekly exhibitions include contemporary art by faculty, students and visiting artists of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. 424-75421723 Hollis St. (across from Province House), Halifax This renovated heritage building houses Nova Scotia's major arts institution with 6,000 works in a permanent collection of contemporary art has major works by Christopher Pratt, Alex Colville, John Nesbitt, and Dawn McNutt. Includes Maritime and folk art by artists such as wood-carver Sydney Howard and painter Joe Norris, and the actual home of the late folk painter Maude Lewis, whose bright, cheery paintings cover the tiny structure inside and out. Eye Level Gallery 425-6412 1672 Barrington St., 3rd Floor, Halifax Currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, this non-profit artist-run centre focuses on the work of emerging and established contemporary Canadian artists. Khyber Centre for the Arts 1588 Barrington St., Halifax 422-9668 A non-profit artist-rungallery for young and emerging artists, the Khyber hosts works in numerous genres, including performance art. Its various galleries are located in a historic, turreted building. Sharing the building is the Khyber Club bar, where young artists spend time discussing their work and drinking Khybeer. Black Gallery Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design 1683 Barrington St., Halifax 424-4062 Ongoing exhibitions by Nova Scotia craftspeople and designers. Production craft display features Nova Scotia craft businesses. Classes and workshops are offered in several working studios for weaving, wood, metal, pottery and multi-purpose.
