905) 525-91401280 Main Street West, Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4L8 McMaster University is named after Senator William McMaster (1811-1887), who bequeathed substantial funds to endow "a Christian school of learning", the University was incorporated in 1887, opened its doors in 1890 and granted its first degree in 1894. In 1930 the University moved from Toronto to Hamilton. In 1957, the University became a non-denomination al private institution. The historic Baptist connection was continued through the separate incorporation and affiliation of a theological school, McMaster Divinity College. McMaster University has 18,000 undergraduates, 2,800 graduate students, and 6,500 staff who have made this an internationally renowned institution. McMaster has well established strengths in healthcare, engineering, business, social sciences, science, and humanities research and education. There are co-op and interns programs in commerce, science and engineering fields. McMaster is Canada's most innovative medical doctoral university according to Maclean's magazine (nine times in the last 12 years in this annual ranking of universities) and was one of only four Canadian universities in the 2005 Academic Ranking of World Universities Top 100. The adjacent McMaster Innovation Park, due to open in 2007, will also be home to the federal government's materials technology laboratory (CANMET-MTL).
