Homes: West Hamilton Neighbourhood

This is the portion of Hamilton between downtown (roughly James) and Cootes Paradise. This area encompasses such diverse neighbourhoods as Durand, Kirkendall, Strathcona east of the 403, and Westdale and Ainslie Wood West of the 403 around the McMaster University campus.

Durand, historically was home to the 'industrialists'. This south of downtown neighbourhood is quite possibly the largest concentration of early 20c castles/mansions in Canada. The grand homes were home to the families whose names graced the signs of the north end factories

Westdale shopping area Westdale was originally an upper-class, master-planned neighbourhood from the 1920s, that forbade eastern Europeans and people of colour from residing there. In later years it ironically became a Jewish neighbourhood with three Jewish Temples. Built around oval streets that surround the centre Westdale Village.

Schools
McMaster University Campus West Hamilton is served by 8 elementary schools, 6 high schools, and two libraries. It is home to McMaster University in the Westdale area, the Columbia Inter College (right nearby). Just to the south, on the Escarpment are Mohawk College and the Hillfield-Strathalian College.

Shopping
This area is well served by a number of Business Improvement Assocations and their shopping districts: Westdale Village, the north-south Locke Street, and the east-west King and Main streets and Hess Village. In nearby downtown is Jackson Square and the Eaton Centre. At the junction of the #6 and the #403 is the big-box stores clustered in the Meadowlands Power Centre.

Recreation The area is home to Cootes Paradise and adjoining parkland, including the Children's Garden & Aviarry in Churchill Park, Dundurn Park (and the Dundurn Castle historical site), Chedoke Civic Golf Course and Ski Club at the escarpment and Bayfront Park and Pier 4 park along Hamilton Harbour.
