Homes: Cooksville Neighbourhood

Cooksville between Mavis on the west and the Etobicoke River in the east, and sandwiched between the 403 and the QEW. The community is what most people associate with "Mississauga" and encompasses the Square One Shopping Centre, and the shopping activity along Hurontario, and then east along Dundas Street towards the Sherway Gardens Mall (technically in Etobicoke). The area east of Cawthra is also known as Applewood. There are industrial lands west of Mavis, and alongside the railway tracks between Dundas and The Queensway, providing significant employment for the neighbourhood. The community's health is well served by the Mississauga Hospital on Hurontario and the Trillium Health Centre by Sherway Gardens. The area's commuters are served by the Cooksville and the Dixie GO Stations.

Cooksville was first named "Harrisville" for one of its earliest settlers, but was renamed in 1836 for Jacob Cook, who operated the first stagecoach mail service and several local businesses. Mississauga's first municipal offices were located at the corner of Dundas and Hurontario Streets, as was the Central Library, the offices for the public and separate school boards and various Federal and Provincial ministries, making Cooksville the area's administrative center. A major 1852 fire destroyed much of the village, which was rebuilt, though by 1873 the area was getting run down. Cooksville as largely been replaced by newer development, leaving few reminders of its early heritage.

Schools
There are 25 elementary schools, 3 secondary schools, 2 private/religious schools in this community, as well as 2 libraries. It is a short commute from the University of Toronto in Mississauga to the west, and Sheridan College in Brampton to the northeast, or Humber College to the southeast.

Shopping
The community is just north of the vibrant Streetsville shopping district along Queen Street (Mississauga Rd). Meadowvale Town Centre is the neighbourhood's big mall, with a number or smaller ones scattered around, and there is a big box complex along Winston Churchill just south of the 401.

Recreation The community has many creeks and ravines, many with recreation pathways. The area's larger parklands are along the Etobicoke Creek, including the 400+ acre Centennial Park, with its various sports facilities and ski hill. Around Square One are the Living Arts Centre, the Sega City Playdium, and the Coliseum multiplex theatre. For live theatre, you can go to the Burnamthorpe Theatre, at the library on Dundas, or to the Stage West Dinner Theatre on Dixie south of the 401. To the north is the Hershey Centre, home to hockey, trade shows, and rock concerts. There are two golf courses in this neighbourhood, as well.
