Homes: Port Credit Neighbourhood

Port Credit is Mississauga's village community on the lake, with a small town feel, and located at the mouth of the Credit River only 20 minutes west of Toronto. The area between the Credit River and Etobicoke Creek is called Lakeview. Port Credit is undergoing a revitalization project to enhance the Village feel, and has already added extensive parks, 2 new marinas and upgraded the Waterfront Trail system which runs for 325 kilometres along the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario. The area's commuters are also served by the Port Credit and the Long Branch GO Stations.

The former Town of Port Credit grew as its excellent harbor was used to ship the area's grain and lumber. The town's first permanent structure was the Government Inn on the east bank of the Credit River which was ordered built by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1798 as a way station for travelers until its destruction by fire in 1861. The village plan was laid out in 1834 and Port Credit thrived with its harbor. After the Lakeshore Highway was paved in 1915, the town became a popular tourist destination. Port Credit became a town in 1961 and merged into Mississauga in 1974.

The Trillium Health Care - Queensway Centre is on the community's north-east edge, providing ready access to health care.

Schools
There are 7 elementary schools, 5 secondary and two private schools in this community, as well as two libraries. It is a short commute from Humber College to the east or University of Toronto in Mississauga to the northwest.

Shopping
The community's downtown Village shopping district is a Mecca for small independent stores and services, mostly along Lakeshore Rd. Also nearby is the Dixie Outlet Mall and Sherway Gardens for those seeking mall shopping.

Recreation The community is situated along the Waterfront Trail system, which runs for 325 kilometres along the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario, and provides recreation for walkers, runners, cylists and in-line skaters. There are several marinas and boat ramps along this stretch of the waterfront. The community is also home to Cawthra Park, which has swimming, skating and a running track. There are also two golf courses in the community.
