Overbrook, Castle Height - Ottawa-Gatineau, Ontario neighbourhoods and nearby communities

Overbrook, known also as O.B., is in the east end of Ottawa, on the east side of the Rideau River, across from Lower Town and Sandy Hill, and just to the south of Vanier and Rockcliffe. The neighbourhood's defining streets are east-west Donald St and Queen Mary St, which run from the river to St Laurent Blvd. This community is increasingly popular with new families and empty nesters that look to live on the edge of the downtown core, while also enjoying open, green space. Along the south edge are the Queensway/417 and the industrial buildings along Coventry Rd.

Homes in Overbrook are 36% owned and 64% rented, and the area attracts residents who like the proximity, but still find home ownership unaffordable.

The west side of Overbrook ("West Overbrook") is considered an "up and coming" neighbourhood, with several active infill developments, low-rise condos, new executive town homes, and a recent premium apartment building overlooking the Rideau River.

The area has a population of about 11,000, with largely Roman Catholic population with a large group of Muslims; especially from Lebanon.


Overbrook-MacArthur is an older neighbourhood; more than half of the dwellings older than 1960. Eleven percent of the dwellings pre-date 1946, 39% were built between 1946 and 1960, 17% were built 1961 - 1970, 32% were built 1971 - 1995, and only 4% were built after 1996.

Overbrook has 4700 dwellings, of which 22% were single family, 8% are semi-detached, 14% are row houses, 18% were high-rise apartments (over 5 stories and 32% were apartments with less than 5 stories. The majority (59%) of residents rented, while 41% owned their homes.



The area is served by St Laurent Shopping Centre, with retail clustering along St Laurent Blvd and MacArthur Ave.


Overbrook is home to River Rain Park along the Rideau River, the Rideau Tennis Club, and the Bernard Grandmaitre Arena
