Evaluating Internet Job Posting sites

There are a number of options open to employers for advertising open positions. While many still use the traditional newspapers for their Career Ads and classified ad postings in the weekend editions, more job postings are shifting to the Internet.

The value of Internet job postings varies widely, and not just the cost, but their effectiveness. Many of the leading Internet job sites are owned by major media players who price the postings competitively with their newspaper properties. Other sites are less expensive but often fail to attract enough attention, either because they are too industry-focused or poorly promoted (often tough to do if the local newspaper see them competing with their on-line property). How do you ensure you are getting the best overall value?

Here are a number of tips for evaluating and using Internet Job Posting web sites, and some features an Employer should look for in on-line recruiting
  • Posting Cost Is this an affordable cost effective solution for your recruiting needs? For many retail or service sector jobs (especially those with higher turnover) a posting cost in the hundreds of dollars is not cost-effective.
  • Ease of use. How long does it take to figure out how to effectively utilize the site to your full benefit? Registering, posting, managing your postings.
  • Quick & Easy job postings. Can you "clone" or duplicate postings for various locations, or are you manually going through the whole process again.
  • Can you store your jobs in the database as active or inactive? How easy is it to handle job postings that are filled, or that need to be reposted when a person leaves? High turnover positions dramatically increase costs with any cost-per posting medium (on-line or newspaper).
  • Is the site you use well web marketed? Does it have the traffic volumes you expect to see your open positions?
  • Does the site help you drive traffic to your own web site? Can you link from your listing to your own web site.
  • Does the site already have an established consistent audience? A site without traffic will not get your postings seen by many people. A site with excellent traffic may get your job posting seen by people "not really looking" who are often the higher quality candidate.
