Travel Accommodation: Choosing a Hotel or Motel
There is accommodation in Ottawa to suit any budget. You can stay at the local Hostel for only dollars a day, or you can stay in hotel suites that are good enough for visiting heads of state. The hotel considered most top-of-the-line is the Chateau Laurier, right beside Parliament Hill.
Pricing is seasonal. Summer is high season in the Ottawa area. Area hotels are also more expensive over holidays and long weekends. Fall and Winter (September to March), with the exception of during Wnterlude, are definitely the less expensive times to visit. Spring starts getting more expensive as the number of events and festivals increases. Each hotel's dates for high, low, and shoulder seasons differ a bit so watch your timing or your hotel. Our pricing guidelines (exclusive of taxes) are as follows:
Location The desired location of the hotel depends on the purpose of your visit.
We have grouped the hotels by "Area" to assist you with selecting appropriate accommodation. The Area is in most cases, the city in which a hotel is located. Inside the city of Ottawa, we also list the part of town (or the former municipality).
If you are in Ottawa on business, you would want a hotel in the Downtown core. These hotels can either be closer to the Byward market (east of the Canal) or the business centre (west of the canal), with both areas within a mile of each other, These hotels are within walking distance (or a $4 to $8 cab ride) of all downtown shopping and restaurants. These hotels are also relatively close ($20 taxi) to the airport. There are some value-concious hotels (and some chains) in the Downtown area. These tend to be further south from the downtown core or further east along Rideau Street, but still close to the other downtown hotels. If you are doing business in Hull, or wishing to visit the Casino de Hull. there are number of properties in the heart of that city.
There are also a number of hotels scattered in the different parts of the city. If you are doing business in the West End or in Kanata, consider the hotels along Carling Avenue, in Bells Corners, and in Kanata. In the East End, the hotels tend to be located along Montreal Rd. Unlike most cities, there are not a large number of hotels close to the airport.
If you are travelling across Canada on the Trans-Canada Highway (#417 here, the "Queensway"), there are several hotels that are most suitable, with a minimum driving distance from the highway. Some of our recommendations include the Chimo Inn (at St Laurent Blvd in the east) and the Embassy West (on Carling to the west). If you are coming in on Highway 7, you will enter the city at either Bell's Corners or on highway 417 and may find the west end hotels most convenient. If you are trying to find something VERY NEAR your meeting, use the "Postal" feature in the Hotel Search screen, where we match the first the digits/characters of the postal code! This also works on our Restaurant search, to find a restaurant near your hotel (and in every other search form on our site).

A traveller may need to rely on a specific feature in a hotel. It may be a hotel-wide capability like airport shuttle or business centre, it may be an in-room feature like Internet access or a whirlpool bath (and vary from room to room), it may relate to fitness to stay in shape on the road or to entertain the children, or you may require special suites.
