When you are parked on a steep hill, you may have more difficulty shifting out of PARK with an automatic transmission. This because the PARK position locks the driving wheels, to resist the vehicle's tendency to roll, so on a steep grade you'll need to apply more than normal pressure to move the gearshift lever. BR>
To help a stuck shift lever, on a very steep grade, you need to give the vehicle an uphill nudge or pull to release pressure on the transmission.

The smarter procedure is to prevent being jammed in PARK on a grade, by stopping the car, applying the parking (emergency) brake, and then putting the car into PARK. Then, start the car and before releasing the parking brake, apply the foot brake and move the shift lever to NEUTRAL or DRIVE.
