Winter in the Canadian Rockies is fairly typical for Canada, though the valleys (and towns) have less snow than the mountain slopes. Here are a couple of winter suggestions:

Skate outdoors Most mountain communities maintain outdoor rinks, but you can also visit the more scenic outdoor rinks (no hockey sticks):
- Banff High School (at Banff Ave & Wolf St)
- Banff Springs Hotel (next to the Waldhouse Restaurant, which provides both a bonfire and shelter)
- Chateau Lake Louise (this scenic rink on the lake is used to film many skating specials)
- Emerald Lake Lodge
- You can also skate indoors at the Banff Recreation Centre, on Mr Norquay Rd, just past the Greyhound Bus Station. (admission from $1 to $2.75, with skate rentals available for $3.25).
Take a hike along the many in-town hiking. They're especially pretty with fresh snow on the ground. The most scenic are:
You can also rent snowshoes from many sporting goods stores and see the close-by wilderness the way Indians and early explorers did.
Sleigh Rides on Lake Louise. A one-hour trip on the lake on a horse-drawn sleigh costs $15 or $12 for children under 9. Reservations at the Chateau recomended.
Toboggan Rides can be had at the Banff Springs Hotel, beside the Waldhaus Restaurant (by the skating rink). Toboggans can be rented at Performance Sports or bought at Standish Home Hardware (both at 208 Bear St).

Visit the zoo The Calgary Zoo and Prehistoric Park is open every day of the year. Its just as much fun in the winter time, with the greenhouse plants and the polarbears happy, though some of the African mammals (zebras, giraffes, elecphants) are cold.
