Sault Ste Marie was founded because of it strategic location smack in the middle of the Great Lakes. Some original land titles for the area still reside in Quebec City and were signed by Samuel de Champlain himself. The canal and locks were built to get larger ships passed the rapids, and were built on each side of the US-Canada border. The Canadian locks are now a national historic site, and the American locks still operate as part of the St Lawrence Seaway.

The "Soo" lies on the international boundary, and locals know that half the action is on the OTHER side of the border. Whether it's the shopping that's cheaper the bars and restaurants more interesting, or just because there's something to do there, border crossing comes as second nature to most.
