Sault Ste Marie has a lot of history, lying on the major French fair trading routes between Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Europeans first explored the area was in 1623, and the first canal was built in 1798 by the British, which was destroyed by the Americans in the War of 1812.

Because Sault Ste Marie is actually two cities in two countries, government here is a little more complex. It is the only major community on the Trans-Canada between Sudbury and Thunder Bay, making it important to the business and the governance of the region. Locals take a strong and active role in all levels of government and its administration.
