Restaurant Scenes
Thunder Bay's ethnic variety over the past century, with its mix of Finnish, Italian, and many other
Europeans has created a tradition of hearty cooking. Thunder Bay's work-hard traditions mean that the food
served here is meant to fill you up and energize you, especially those working
on the harbour or outside in the wintertime. This is also great for those rugged
individuals enjoying the scenic splendours around Thunder Bay.
Thunder Bay has three restaruant districts, due to its unusual history: The Downtown North, the Downtown
South, and the Intercity area.
The downtown north, formerly Port Arthur, is getting a lot of development
because of the Marina Park and the great views of Sleeping Giant across the
bay. There are a lot of finer restaurants in this area, particularly around
Algoma & Bay. The large number Finnish immigrants to the area has led to some
of the finest Finnish restaurants in Canada, with some serving a most excellent
breakfast. There are also some great Italian restaurants here too. Because the
Community Auditorium is just to the south, many people
head here for dinner before or after performances.
The downtown south, around Victoriaville, is where many of the local and
provincial government workers are clustered. This area has many of the areas
older and more charming buildings (and therefore restaurants), and is also surrounded by
the city's largest industrial areas. There are a lot of lunch restaurants
in this area, and a number of establishments west along Arthur Street, toward
the airport.
In the middle along Memorial Drive, close the University and the College, and
between the Intercity Shopping Centre and the Port Arthur Stadium are the mishmash of "big
box" stores and chain restaurants. You'll find something for pretty well anyone
here: choice is the watchword. This area gets busy anytime school's in, there's
a game on, or after payday when the families are eating out.
Use the pop-down list at upper-left to quickly find restaurants by cuisine. You can use the Restaurant Search Form to quickly filter the restaurants by community/neighbourhood AND by cuisine. You can even search by postal code, even by street to find all restaurants really close to you.
