Introduction
BC Transit covers the Greater Victoria area, and is run by the Province.

Fares depend on the distance travelled (measured in "zones"). Fare zone boundaries are located at Patricia Bay Highway and Sayward Road on the Saanich Peninsula, and in the Western Communities, at Highway 1A and Dukrill Road and Highway 1 west of Thetis Interchange. Passengers making trips crossing a zone boundary must pay a two-zone fare.

There are two fare levels: Adult fares and senior citizens (over 65, with proof of age), children 5 - 13 years, students 14-19 with a valid GoCard.

You must pay bus fares with exact change, since the drivers do not carry change. You can purchase a DayPass in advance at convenience stores, or wherever you see the "FareDealer" sign.

Monthly passes are available for various special groups: UVIC students can get a monthly pass for $56.00, Camosun College students can get a monthly pass for $42 (both have discounts for semester passes). The elderly, and those receiving provincial disability benefits can buy an annual pass for $45. There is also a PROPASS program, which is paid by payroll deduction by your employer.

On weekends (between Friday 6 pm and Sunday end-of-service) an adult or senior with a bus pass (monthly or day pass)can bring two kids onto the bus at no additional cost.

Transfers
You will need a "transfer" if you need to use more than one bus to complete your trip, and are using cash or tickets as fare payment. Be sure to request the correct transfer as you board the bus, depending on the zones in which you are travelling:
  • A White Transfer is for one-zone travel within the core area of Greater Victoria.
  • A Green transfer is for two-zone travel from the core area to the Saanich Peninsula or the Western Communities and requires a two-zone payment.
  • A Pink Transfer is for one-zone travel within the Saanich Peninsula or the Western Communities.

Customer Service & Information
There are several services to help you use BC Transit safely, effectively and efficiently. For schedules and recommended route information you may call (250) 382-6161 24 hours a day. A BC Transit representative will tell (even mail you a map if you ask) the best route to take when you tell them your starting point and destination. Any concerns, suggestions or commendations regarding BC Transit may be voiced by dialing the same number.

Access for Persons with Limited Mobility
BC Transit was the first transit system in Canada to incorporate low floor busses (also called "kneeling busses") into its fleet for those who are in wheelchairs and who have difficulty climbing stairs. Unique in design, low floor busses are equipped with retractable ramps.

BC Transit also offers the HandyDART buses, which provide convenient door-to-door transportation for people with special needs. Any person unable to use regular transit due to a physical or mental impairment is eligible for handyDART service. To book a trip (and to register with handyDART), phone 727-7811 anytime after 8:00 am seven days a week. You can use the HandyDART service for regular recurring trips or for one-time trips including for shopping, social visits or recreational activities between 7 am and 10 pm (8 am on weekends and holidays). HandyDART users can purchase tickets on an individual basis, or buy a monthly pass.
