![]() The community was named The Crossing and was renamed High River in 1892 by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The river was called the High Woods River by Thomas Blakiston in 1858, which was a translation of the Blackfoot name ispiti or "tall timbers", referring to the trees growing on its high banks. George Lane Park in the middle of town offers swimming and boating. There is also the 27 hole Highwood Golf and Country Club, and the 9-hole Rio Vista Golf Course. The town's history is illustrated on 18 murals painted on buildings around the town. Annual events include the Little Britches Rodeo complete with parade and children's rodeo (Victoria Day weekend in late May), the North American Chuckwagon Championship (late June), Guy Weadick Memorial Rodeo (late June), Canada Day Celebrations (July 1), and the High River Country Fair (late August).
