Some appliances such up energy even in standby mode. For example your microwave still uses power for the digital clock, while your VCR uses some power since it may be programmed to record something. Your computer uses power even when a screen saver is displaying on the screen.

Consider completely unplugging some appliances, unless your owners manuals may recommend Standby Mode to reduce wear & tear on the equipment, and in an entertainment centre putting all "cumb" components on a single power bar which can be turned off.

*Windows versions after XP have a Standby mode, useful in laptops for cutting power to unused components (screen, hard drive, CD-ROM,...) to conserve battery power. These computers also offer a Hibernate mode, which records an image of the screen and open programs before shutting down, and reloads all open sessions when the comptuer is restarted or un-hibernated.
