About 120 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Smoky Lake's 1,000 resident settlement began as a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post with a Methodist mission. There is a 7,000 acre working bison and elk ranch, northeast of town, which also has a bed & breakfast.

Experience the life of Plains and Woodland Cree Indians, missionaries, fur traders and pioneer farmers. Local history is explained with a slide show and guided tours of the former clerk's home, furnished with pioneer articles. Allow 1 hour to view the site. From the first of July to Labour Day, the site is open noon to 8 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 15 to June 30.
