In 1692, Fredericton began as a French fur-trading fort at the point where the Nashwaak River drains into the Saint John, but abandoned after a big flood. It was resettled again in 1732 by a group of French Acadians who began successful farming in the area. In 1758, after British Forces captured Louisburg, the British swept through the St. John River Valley, burning homes and expelling Acadians., resettling the area themselves. Ever since, its been both peaceful and prosperous.

The Saint John River Valley starts in the State of Maine flowing east, then south. FoundLocally has an excellent description of communities along the way. Places like Florenceville, home to the McCain Foods french fry empire. Grand Falls, has a spectacular waterfall. Mactaquac with its lake and provincial park.
