The Hamilton area has a storied history, with First Nations roots, and early settlement by United Empire Loyalists. During the War of 1812 a number of battles were fought in the area, most notably the Battle of Stoney Creek.

Take the ferry or the bridge across the harbour to visit Dartmouth. Once a separate city, now merged into the new regional municipality, it has many interesting areas and is best known for its many lakes and ponds.

Hamilton is bisected by the Niagara Escarpment, which provides the city great views and tons of parkland. The various parks are linked by a number of recreational trails, including the world famous Bruce Trail, which meanders along the path of the Escarpment from the Niagara River to Tobermory.
