Charleswood-Westdale neighbourhoods

This neighbourhood ha a bit of a rural feel, if only because of its separation from the rest of the city by the Assiniboine forest on the east, and the Assiniboine River on the north. This area has developed over the years in pockets, leaving smaller open, undeveloped areas between built-up ones. The area has larger lot sizes, especially for the executive homes over 10 years old.
Each of the neighbourhoods offers something unique. Forest Park (Elmhurst) is next to the Assiniboine Forest offers many newer homes in the $85,000 to $100,000 range. Ridgedale and Marlton, built around Roblin Blvd, an extension of Corydon, are nested between the Charleswood Golf Club on the east and a bend in the Assiniboine River. Southboine, along the river, offers older, interesting homes. River West Park offers residents a view of Glendale Golf & Country Club on the opposite bank of the Assiniboine and has homes in the $85,000 to $300,000 range. Westdale is an older development, and offers a mix of home styles and prices, including townhouses and apartments. Prices in this community run $80,00 - $150,000.
Schools
Schools in this area are managed by the Assiniboine South School District #3. The area has 9 elementary schools, and one secondary schools, though some area students attend high schools just east of the Assiniboine Forest. The community also has one public library.
Shopping
The sparsely populated area has a few retail concentrations along Roblin Blvd, Corydon Ave, and Grant Ave. There is a small mall, Park West at the west end of Roblin. For major shopping trips, area residents head either to Unicity Mall on Portage across the river, or east to Grant Park.
Recreation
The community surrounds the Charleswood Golf Course, and has numerous parks and green space scattered around, with several along the pretty Assiniboine River. On the community’s eastern edge is the Assiniboine Forest, with its numerous hiking and cross-country skiing trails and the municipal Tuxedo Golf Course. The centrepiece of the community is the Assiniboine Park, with its formal gardens, pond, cricket pitch, miniature train, the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, English Garden and International Goodwill Garden, and pedestrian bridge to the north bank of the Assiniboine River, and last but not least, the Assiniboine Zoo. The community has 2 outdoor rinks, 2 indoor arenas (one at the Varsity View Sportsplex), 1 indoor pool, and 2 tennis courts. The community is close to the Assiniboia Downs Race Track (horse racing) and the Red River Exhibition Park, across the Assiniboine River, accessed via the Perimeter Highway.
