West End-Wolseley-Sargent Park neighbourhoods

[ Other Neighbourhoods | Northwest Neighbourhoods Map ]

This community is nestled between the downtown and St James Street, and between Notre Dame in the north and the Assiniboine River to the south. This area has many older homes, some well-maintained while others are fixer-uppers. There have been a number of in-fill homes built in this community, as a result of the former CORE Area Initiative.

Wolseley, south of Portage Avenue and adjoining the river has many larger older homes and huge trees, though relatively small lots. There are a number of older walk-up apartments making for a high population density. This area is popular with both seniors and young professionals. The community has an active and vocal residents association. The northwest portion of Sargent Park and Minto have some nice parks, including Westview.

Schools

The area is mature and has lots of schools for the population. It is served by Winnipeg School District #1, and has 9 elementary schools and 3 secondary schools. The area is served by 2 public libraries, and is close to the downtown main branch. The community is close to the University of Winnipeg’s downtown campus, and the Red River Community College’s campus, just north of the airport.

Polo Park Shopping Centre

Shopping

The community is dotted with many small shops and services. The largest mall in the area is the Polo Park Shopping Centre, which also has a movie theatre. Nearby are the downtown shopping malls, the touristy Forks Market, and across the Assiniboine River are Osborne Village’s quirky collection of shops.

Recreation

This community has a number of smaller parks, though Sargent Park has an arena, outdoor rink, indoor pool, tennis courts, and running track. The area has four other outdoor rinks, three tennis courts, and an outdoor pool. Also popular is Westview Park, which offers great hillside views of downtown Winnipeg. At the west edge of the community is Winnipeg Stadium, home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Arena (former home of the Jets, now home of the Manitoba Moose hockey team). The Manitoba Hockey hall of Fame is housed in the Winnipeg Arena, and there are museums for the Queen’s Own Cameroon Highlanders and the Royal Winnipeg Rifles Regiment on St Matthews at Minto. There is a large multiplex cinema at Polo Park, and a smaller cinema on Ellice.
